Is ChatGPT Private? Who Can See Your Conversations and Data?

ChatGPT can help you draft emails, review documents, explore ideas, and work through complicated questions. That convenience often depends on sharing context, and context can include personal details, client information, or business plans. Before typing something sensitive into a chatbot, it is reasonable to ask: Is ChatGPT private, and who can access what I share? The answer depends on which ChatGPT product you use, your settings, and what happens to the information after you submit it. Privacy is not a single switch: model training, conversation storage, access controls, and third-party sharing are separate questions. This guide explains those distinctions using OpenAI’s official documentation, reviewed in October 2026.

Is ChatGPT Private? The Short Answer

ChatGPT has privacy and security controls, but it should not be treated as a completely confidential or anonymous space by default. In personal ChatGPT accounts, eligible conversations may be used to improve models unless you opt out. You can turn off model improvement for new chats, use Temporary Chat, and delete saved conversations. Those actions affect different parts of the data lifecycle; none is a blanket guarantee that information is never processed or retained. OpenAI says that business offerings such as ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and its API platform do not use organizational inputs and outputs for model training by default. Those services have different organizational and technical controls from consumer ChatGPT. Anyone evaluating privacy should check the policy for the exact product and workspace they use, not assume every ChatGPT account works alike.

Who Can See or Process ChatGPT Conversations?

When you send a message, OpenAI’s systems process it to respond. OpenAI also describes limited sharing with service providers that help operate its services, subject to confidentiality and security obligations. Authorized access may occur for purposes described in the applicable policies, such as support, security, abuse investigation, or legal compliance. This is different from claiming that other ChatGPT users can simply browse your private chats; ordinary conversations are not public posts.

Other people may gain access through choices or tools outside the standard one-to-one chat. For example, a user can intentionally share a conversation link, an organization may manage a business workspace under its own policies, and connected apps or GPT actions may transmit information to third parties. Once content is sent to another service, that service’s policies may apply. It is therefore worth checking integrations and sharing settings before discussing sensitive matters.

Does ChatGPT Use Your Conversations for Training?

For personal ChatGPT services, OpenAI says it may use eligible user content to improve models when model improvement is enabled. To opt out, open Settings, select Data controls, and turn off “Improve the model for everyone.” According to OpenAI, new conversations are then excluded from model training, while existing chats can remain in your history. Turning off training is not the same as deleting conversation records. OpenAI also notes a qualification: when users proactively submit feedback on a response, the associated conversation may be used for model improvement even if they previously opted out. Business and API offerings have different defaults: OpenAI says it does not train on their inputs and outputs by default unless an organization opts in under the relevant terms. These distinctions are why the statement “ChatGPT trains on every conversation” is inaccurate.

What Is Temporary Chat, and How Private Is It?

Temporary Chat is designed for conversations you do not want kept in your regular chat history. OpenAI says temporary chats are not used to improve its models while they remain temporary, do not appear in chat history, and do not create or update memories. A temporary chat may still be retained for up to 30 days for safety purposes, so “temporary” does not mean the message disappears from all systems immediately.

OpenAI also allows some temporary chats to be saved as regular conversations. If saved, they then follow the applicable history, personalization, and model-improvement settings. When using GPTs with actions or connected third-party services, information sent to those services may be subject to their own retention rules. Temporary Chat is useful for reducing certain forms of persistence, but it does not replace judgment about what you share.

What Happens When You Delete a Chat?

Deleting a saved chat removes it from your account view immediately. OpenAI says it schedules deleted chats for permanent removal from its systems within 30 days, subject to exceptions such as legal or security obligations or content already de-identified and disassociated from your account. Archiving is different: it hides a conversation from the sidebar without deleting it. Files may require separate attention. OpenAI’s current retention guidance explains that files saved in a Library can be managed independently of chats, so deleting a conversation does not necessarily delete a file saved there. If you uploaded sensitive material, review the relevant file controls as well as the chat itself. The practical lesson is simple: training opt-out, chat deletion, file deletion, and retention policies each solve different problems.

A single blue circle marks the folder. Generous empty space around the group.

What Information Should You Avoid Sharing?

Even with privacy controls enabled, avoid entering information you are not authorized to disclose. This includes passwords, API keys, government identifiers, complete financial account details, medical records, confidential client files, unpublished intellectual property, and internal business information that could cause harm if exposed. If you need AI assistance with a sensitive document, first ask whether the task can be completed with identifying details removed or replaced.

For professionals, the decision is also contractual and organizational. A consultant may have a confidentiality agreement; a business may restrict which tools can process customer information; a regulated team may need approved vendors and retention terms. The relevant question is not merely whether a chatbot has a privacy setting, but whether the specific use is permitted and the controls are sufficient for the information involved. How to Evaluate a More Privacy-Focused AI Alternative

If privacy is a major factor in choosing an AI assistant, compare services using a consistent checklist. Ask where the original prompt goes, whether personal identifiers can be masked before external processing, which model providers receive the request, whether content is used for training, how long it is retained, and what deletion options are available. Also ask what happens when the system cannot recognize a sensitive detail. A platform can promise privacy while still forwarding information to external models, so transparency matters more than the label. It helps to distinguish private AI features from private model hosting. Some privacy-focused platforms add safeguards around external models; others run models in dedicated environments. Neither approach is automatically right for every workflow. For an explanation of these differences, read What Is Private AI? How Private AI Platforms Protect Your Data.

Frequently Asked Questions About ChatGPT Privacy

Are ChatGPT chats private?

ChatGPT chats are not public by default, but they are processed under the applicable service policies. Privacy depends on the product, settings, sharing actions, and any integrations you use.

Are ChatGPT conversations private from other users?

Other users cannot ordinarily view your conversations merely because they use ChatGPT. However, sharing a link, using a shared workspace, or sending information through third-party tools can change who has access.

How private is ChatGPT with model training turned off?

Disabling “Improve the model for everyone” prevents new eligible conversations from being used for model training, according to OpenAI. It does not by itself erase chat history, stop all processing, or guarantee zero retention.

Is Temporary Chat completely confidential?

No. It is excluded from model improvement while temporary and does not appear in regular history, but OpenAI says a copy may be retained for up to 30 days for safety. Third-party actions can involve separate data practices.

Does deleting a conversation delete everything immediately?

No. A deleted chat disappears from your account view immediately, but permanent system deletion is generally scheduled within 30 days, with stated exceptions. Files stored separately may need to be deleted separately.

Privacy Starts With Knowing How Your AI Tools Handle Data

ChatGPT provides meaningful privacy controls, but no single setting answers every question about access, training, retention, and external processing. The safest approach is to understand the specific service you use, limit unnecessary sensitive details, and review its current policies before relying on it for confidential work.
